This was my first camcorder. I wasn't sure how much I'd use it and didn't want to lash out on something that gathered dust. I soon became addicted and quickly outgrew this little machine.

Pros: Easy to use, light, small. The sound is surprisingly good. You can carry it everywhere in a small bag, ready for those unexpected moments.
Cons: The images are adequate but far from wow-factor crisp. The colours are a tad washed out.

One can't expect too much from an entry level camcorder. If you just want something to capture family memories and prefer not to spend a lot of money, this may be just the thing. However if, like me, you start to get interested, you'll soon be on the lookout for something more.
Sony DCR-SX40 lives up to solid Sony reputation

Yes, very easy to use. The on-screen menu system is intuitive. If you're vaguely familiar with digital video, there's no need to read the manual at all. One of the truly great features for me is that there is NO NEED to install ANY software in order to connect the camera to the computer and transfer the data. Video and stills are held in easy to find folders and you can simply drag and drop them into your computer folder.

The on-camera review function is greatly facilitated by it's display-by-date design. You simply browse the dates and it shows you thumbnails of each video shot on that date. Click one to view it. Very easy.

I bought this handy cam for my daughter. She really loves it, very easy to use and the battery lasts good. I would recommend it for someone looking for a easy to use camera, at a good price. I really recommend using amazon for any purchases!!

I'm afraid most of the people here are right: This camera's video quality is very poor.

It's too bad. It'd be great to have a camcorder this compact and easy to use. It has the right features. And the price was certainly reasonable--but I guess you get what you pay for.

When you play video on the camera's display, it looks all right. But show it on your PC, or on a TV, and yick! Lack of detail, bland colors, obvious pixelation... I don't think most people would be happy with it at all.

The still-photo quality is even worse. It's just unusable. You can see how bad the photos are as soon as you take them. This is very surprising for a company like Sony, which I usually associate with quality. Why they included a still-photo feature at all is beyond me.

Sony makes a big deal about the Carl Zeiss lens. I shudder to think what this camera's image quality would have been like if they'd used an _ordinary_ lens.
