JVC Everio MS120 Dual Flash Camcorder

From the Manufacturer

The JVC Everio GZ-MS120 has a dual pair of SD/SDHC card slots and offers continuous recording: when one storage medium fills up, recording automatically switches to the other. When recording with the dual-slot GZ-MS120 in the highest quality mode (Ultra), recording capacity ranges from 3.7 hours using a pair of 8GB cards to 15 hours using two 32GB cards. In the lowest quality mode (Eco), recording time ranges from 20 hours to 80 hours.

Everio MS120 camcorders make sharing and watching videos easier than ever. New for this year is the One Touch Export function that allows Everio videos to be imported into iTunes and loaded into an iPod or iPhone. All 2009 Everios also offer One Touch DVD burning and the One Touch Upload function that JVC introduced to users in 2008 as a new and convenient way to upload videos to YouTube.

To use any of the three functions, simply connect Everio to a PC using the supplied USB cable. Then, choose one of three buttons on the Everio: UPLOAD, EXPORT, or DIRECT DVD. Pressing the button will launch the appropriate Windows PC application that comes bundled with Everio, and you follow the simple on-screen prompts. With just a few mouse clicks the process of uploading to YouTube, exporting to iTunes, burning to disc or transferring to an external hard disk drive will be completed. For uploading to YouTube, the user can perform an in-camera edit of any length video to fit the 10-minute YouTube limit.

The new Everio MediaBrowser software supplied with all Everio models is a Windows application providing an easy-to-search calendar-type graphical interface for indexing and finding video files. Thumbnail images of recorded videos and stills are superimposed on the calendar so it’s easy to see when any scene was recorded. The Everio MediaBrowser also allows easy playback, simple cut editing, and “Decomotion” to spruce up recorded footage with animated graphics for upload to YouTube. It also supports Export to iTunes, Upload to YouTube, burning to disc or transferring to HDD.

Another new feature found on all Everio camcorders is Digest Playback, which offers an easy and entertaining way to check the content residing on Everio’s HDD or SD/SDHC card. The function automatically selects highlight scenes from among the recorded content using JVC’s proprietary algorithm and plays back what looks like a “coming attractions” trailer for a movie. Sixty minutes of footage is condensed into five minutes of highlight scenes.

Other Everio features have been enhanced for 2009. Laser Touch Operation has been updated to allow control of zooming and recording using either the Laser Touch scroll bar or buttons next to the LCD screen, as well as by the standard zoom lever and REC button. And as before, Laser Touch makes it easy to browse through thumbnail images of recorded scenes and access menu selection. Power-linked operation, long offered by JVC, goes a step further this year. Simply opening the LCD monitor automatically opens the built-in lens cover and powers up the camcorder. Closing the LCD also closes the lens cover and shuts down the power. With Quick Restart, recording can start in about one second after the LCD is re-opened.

In addition to performance and convenience, the 2009 Everio line offers plenty of style and shooting comfort. New designs feature elegant curves, a silver-framed LCD and comfortable, angled grips with a new dual-use strap. The strap can be used in the usual camcorder fashion, supporting the user’s hand when shooting, or it can be extended and used as a wrist strap like the type on most digital still cameras.

Customer Reviews

Easy to use and clear picture quality

Review Date: April 21, 2010
Reviewer: J. Taylor,
I purchased this camcorder in November of 2009. I ordered this product in red. It is very easy to use and the picture quality is very clear. The strap on the side is a bit small if you have larger hands, or long fingers. It is very sturdy as I have dropped it twice and it has not even scratched! Transferring your videos onto your computer is very easy as well. Overall a well made product.
Still pictures come out a bit blurry.
Good product for the price

Decent camcorder. Easy to use and stores videos on SD cards. Memory is expandable. Decent quality videos. The cam is pretty small, so people with big hands might face difficulty in handling it.

It really shouldn't be difficult. Engineer a camera that saves video files in a format that can be readily copied and pasted so that they can be read by any computer. Instead, JVC locks you in to their proprietary video format that is really only good at doing one thing - showing the video on the camera's viewscreen. So much about this camera seems right. Awesome zoom. Dual SD card slots, reasonable price, etc. etc. But thats all well and good until you actually try to work with the video you've shot. A typical over-engineered piece of junk that assumes all consumers are dumb and won't want to use anything but its own specialized computer software. The geniuses at JVC must be so embarrassed by the junk processing software that it isn't (A) resident on the camera so when sharing with other computers it can be loaded, (B) downloadable off their website, (C) barely acknowledged as even existing on their website. Do yourself a favor and don't get wowed by the specs or the price. If you can't use the video you've shot - what is the point of shooting it in the first place? Or buying a camera to shoot it with? Buy something better.
An Amazing Little Camera!

The first thing I thought when I opened the box was - "Wow this thing's tiny!" It's packaged in a rather large box with a lot of padding. The small size is great, though. It makes taking a video camera with you easier than ever!

As for ease of use, the Everio MS120 is second to none! In the first ten minutes of opening it, I took a couple of minutes to review the manual (failure to read the manual is the cause of most bad reviews for any technology item) and made sure that I knew what I was doing, connected the battery, plugged in the power adapter, inserted my SD card, recorded a short video, took out the SD card, put the SD card into my computer and watched the video - like I said - all in the first 10 minutes.

I'm not sure why people had so much trouble (in reference to previous reviews). I should say that I'm an IT Professional, so technology is an everyday thing for me, but this camera is still easy for anyone to use.

One problem that people may have had is that they didn't use the included CD's to get the codec for the .MOD format (which is already built in to Windows Vista and Windows 7 operating systems), and it is correct that without this, you won't be able to work with the format for video editing or anything else.

The video quality is amazing, as well. It looks even better on my computer and on DVD (I had a DVD all burned using Windows DVD maker within the first hour of opening the camera) than it did on the camera. Anyone with problems with quality may have a problem with their settings or perhaps even their lens.

I would give this camera 5 stars any day!

It is very easy to use, but very difficult to save movies to a disc. After working on it for 6 hrs, still have not figured it out, not sure what to do next.
